Heceta Sunset by Ed O’Rourke

September 2023 - Heceta Sunset

About the Image(s)

While Neil's mom would classify this as "ABS" I still like it. I took this at Heceta Beach, about 10 miles from my house. I wanted to see when the sun would set between the two rock formations and I got lucky. I wasn't planning on the people walking on the beach but I liked the reflection on the water along with the silhouette of the folks on the beach. I kept it a bit on the underexposed side to highlight the silhouette but I did want to pick up a little light and detail in the sand. I also did a little with the color balance to bring out a bit more of the red. I tried to bring out some detail in the rocks but nothing came out to my liking so I let that part alone.

I took the shot with my Canon R; 24-105 lens at 105mm; aperture f/20; shutter speed 1/250; ISO 500

Hi Ed, Nice placement of the sun and how lucky for the people and dog!

Hope you don't mind, but I took a crack and did some quick edits as it felt a bit flat to me. I boosted the clarity and dehaze a bit, increased the shadows and whites, and decreased the highlights a tad. Finally, I increased the vibrance a bit and decreased the saturation. As you'll see, I also cropped it to 16x9 as I thought it made it a bit more balanced.   Posted: 09/16/2023 16:48:38

Ed, IMV this is the best, most creative image you have submitted to Group 93. And i say that with no disrespect to your earlier entries! The "star" of the show (pun intended} is the Sun, with the family playing a supporting role. The manner in which you have placed the family in full sunset tells me they are "Wowed" by what they see. Further, that the texture of the rocks on either side of the sun are dark and unrecognizable makes the silhouettes even more significant. I really don't want to know any more about those rocks. I'm all in on the sunset! Well done.   Posted: 09/21/2023 11:47:41

I think my Mum would have been ok with this sunset as it is really about the family having a wonderful time in the glow of the setting Sun and the endless interesting things to be found on the tide line. Great shot with the Sun between the two rock angles and great timing with the family.   Posted: 09/23/2023 23:06:32

Mum's are important, I'm glad that your Mum would have been OK with this shot.   Posted: 09/24/2023 20:33:59

A nicely intriguing image! For me, the silhouetting works very nicely. Although my eye immediately goes to the Sun, there's nothing distinctive about it to hold my eye, which then moves down and explores, at length, the family enjoying themselves and the end of the day. I find it especially effective that the child (or so I assume) is framed by the Sun's reflection. I find this evokes a wonderful mood, at once pensive and joyous. I like it when an image can evoke simultaneously two feelings that one doesn't necessarily usually encounter together.

A little LrC tip: if you want to tone down the "bleed" around the Sun, try brushing in a little dehaze. I also added just a tiny bit more light on the side of the seastack by applying a radial adjustment with a bit of negative dehaze.

O, I forgot to mention that I think the dog really "makes it"   Posted: 09/25/2023 19:35:48

Lovely story telling photo. Nicely balanced image. Every elements seem in their right spots. If the guy on the left faces the same direction as the other two or three include the dog, it is even better I think. Great shot!

Can I ask why you have used F20 please?   Posted: 09/28/2023 02:22:33
