Yalour Islands, Antartica by Dawn Gulino

January 2025 - Yalour Islands, Antartica

About the Image(s)

The Yalour Islands are located east of the Argentine Islands in Penola Strait. They were discovered and named by Charcot’s French Antarctic Expedition of 1903-5. The low-lying islands are scattered over a distance of 2.4 km (1.5 mi) and are home to over 8,000 breeding pairs of Ad?©lie penguins, spread among 13 colonies. Grounded icebergs are also common in this region along with humpback whales.

I just got back from Antartica and to say it is an amazing place to photograph is an understatement. The landscape is incredible, the wildlife abundant and sleeping…is forced.

This image was shot at 100mm, 1/2500th at f/8, ISO 500. Most of my shot were at 500 ISO and set a higher shutter priority given we were shooting on zodiacs or the ship a bunch. I forgot to lower this to get a better depth of field, but still like the results.

I wanted to capture the beautiful mountains, glaciers, icebergs and the penguins. The Ad?©lie penguins were my favorite of the main three we saw on this trip, they were so expressive with their movements. The Ad?©lie’s were nesting and sitting on two eggs each on the rock in the mid-ground.

What was the temperature where you were, when you took this image?? And how far were you from the base of this mountain? As always, your photos are crisp, clear, in focus, and easy to look at! Given the difficulty of taking photos of snow landscapes, I think you diid very well, here.   Posted: 01/06/2025 21:41:06

Hi Paul, we had some mild weather and it was probably in the 30-40s or so that day.
As for how far away I was from the base of the mountain, hmm, unsure, hard to tell with the scale and the water/icebergs in between. We had to get on a zodiac from our boat, navigate through the icebergs, then get on the land. Maybe 1/2 to 3/4s of mile?   Posted: 01/08/2025 00:50:28

What's not to like about this photo? I like your asymmetrical composition with the mountain off to the side but dominating the photo. The colors in the sky add to the image and I think the floating ice along with the penguins on the rocks provide interesting detail. And then the three penguins on the snow in the foreground is a great finishing touch. Technically I think your lighting and focus is spot on.

As I'm always thinking of improving my B&W I was wondering what this would look in B&W so I though I would give it a try. I hope you don't mind. I like your color version better, but I think the B&W version is pretty good too.   Posted: 01/18/2025 18:01:17

Thanks Ed, appreciate it!
I never mind you editing my images a different way, always fun to see how someone else interprets a picture. The B&W would be interesting for sure and I like it, but also prefer the color. That day, the sky was so moody and had amazing layers of colors to it and that's what I wanted to try to convey.   Posted: 01/18/2025 19:08:40

Amazing image. I have to say that this will stay on my bucket list. For me the 2 I am sorry the 3 penguins in the lower right are the stars of the show. As always great capture.   Posted: 01/20/2025 01:46:27
