Venice is Wonderful by Paul Smith

November 2024 - Venice is Wonderful

About the Image(s)

Venice gets my vote for the most Extraordinary city, so far. No cars/trucks/vans…either one walks, bikes, or takes a water taxi (or Gondola). One night, while at dinner along side the Grand Canal, the tide came in and our feet were under water. Nothing like Spaghetti Carbonara with our server splashing her way to our table! Oh well! Canon 90D, Canon 24 - 105 lens, ISO 800, SS 500, B/W conversion using NIK Silver Efex

The black and white treatment looks great in this picture. Lots of details, strong contrast and no apparent grain (things that are sometimes missing in B&W pics) give a high image quality that rewards study.
I like that people are included, it gives scale and, more interestingly, suggests some back story (is the guy on the bridge tailing the guy going through the door? Very James Bond!).   Posted: 11/11/2024 01:54:30

As always I look at your B&W photos with a bit of awe and envy. I agree with Neil in how you have lots of sharp detail and high contrast. I like how you use a fast shutter speed to keep the ripples in the water very apparent. I also appreciate the tight composition which, for my eye, forces me into the scene to see the person on the bridge. I like it.   Posted: 11/11/2024 20:05:42

Great use of black and white, feels like an old classic image. I like the person on the bridge, in fact I'd like to see him highlighted a bit more if possible.   Posted: 11/17/2024 20:31:45

Actually, when I took the shot I did not notice the two actors in this play! The Bridge and the boat beneath it were what caught my eye! And thanks for your comments.   Posted: 11/20/2024 17:02:08
