Barred Owl by Bruce Benson

July 2024 - Barred Owl

About the Image(s)

About the image: Taken in Fife, Washington, I was on a short walk and heard this owls call. I was walking using my handy baby stroller to carry my 800 mm lens and camera. It is interesting that the pink color in the image is a passing train that is blurred by the movement of the train. F 5.6/ 1/800/ ISO 3200. Canon 1DX MK II/ Canon 800 5.6.

Bruce, excellent crop and layout of this Barred Owl. You were very lucky to have that train pass because the background is a non distracting background that actually compliments the subject. Like everything about this image.   Posted: 07/13/2024 00:13:38

The background, while nice and blurred, also has a pink hue to it which is rather unusual but effective. Sharp, with good catch light in the eyes. Very good soft box lighting. Maybe crop in from the left a little so the tree trunk doesn't carry as much visual weight. Very good image.   Posted: 07/18/2024 15:03:02

Thanks Jerry, I was lucky to find this owl since it was in and urban area . I heard it calling while walking my schnauzer and had my camera gear back in my car. Bruce   Posted: 07/26/2024 02:03:04

What a beautiful image of this owl. Getting it on an open perch- and a diagonal no less- is such a great find. Having that train go by and add the pink gives it a very unusual touch that works for me. I think the fact that the light is even and soft is a big factor in that working though, with the overall pastel quality to the image.
I find the balance between the owl and the trunk to be pleasing. Given the direction of the owl's gaze, I wouldn't want it any closer to the left edge of the frame. If it was looking to the right, it might be a different matter.

This works very well Bruce, made by the soft pink colour- making it a successful unusual image. I like the way it's looking left and you have positioned it perfectly in the frame.   Posted: 07/27/2024 21:39:08

Beautiful shot Bruce. I never would have guessed the pink background to be a train and yet there she sits not bothered at all from the noise. I like how light the owl is, I don't think I have even seen them with such light coloring. Is that the benefits of the 800 prime lens? Or maybe it isn't a barred owl?? Anyway, the color is beautiful and once again tack sharp.   Posted: 07/27/2024 21:39:21

A stellar capture in a wide open space with no distracting limb. Great timing in waiting until a train came by ;). My owl pictures all about the clutter in front of them so I am jealous of your opportunity .   Posted: 07/28/2024 13:39:42

Such a nice capture and beautiful presentation. What I feel that some more space around the bird may give a better presentation, specifically details of the tree might be more beautiful, though this is my opinion. Thanks for sharing this beautiful moment.   Posted: 07/28/2024 18:49:35
