About the Image(s)
Just a simple up close and personal heron portrait. I was looking to focus in on the prominent S-curve while keeping background distractions at a minimum; this I did by using the longest setting on my 70-300 mm Nikon zoom lens, combined with a uniform appearing background. Bright ambient lighting allowed a fast shutter speed (probably around 1,200/sec) and I was fortunate that there were few whites to worry about, in terms of over exposure. After working around a bit in Camera Raw I opened into Photoshop and On1 FX Eight to finish things up ??“ including cropping in, reversing orientation of the bird, and adding a slight vignette.

There are some artefacts that are not present in the original, on the right edge above the bill tip. There's a smudge of red, and what looks like an echo of the bill tip above it.
Nice colors, an attractive portrait.   Posted: 07/10/2026 23:17:07
