About the Image(s)

Just a simple up close and personal heron portrait. I was looking to focus in on the prominent S-curve while keeping background distractions at a minimum; this I did by using the longest setting on my 70-300 mm Nikon zoom lens, combined with a uniform appearing background. Bright ambient lighting allowed a fast shutter speed (probably around 1,200/sec) and I was fortunate that there were few whites to worry about, in terms of over exposure. After working around a bit in Camera Raw I opened into Photoshop and On1 FX Eight to finish things up ??“ including cropping in, reversing orientation of the bird, and adding a slight vignette.

Yes Jerry, the S curve (as flipped) helps here a lot. A nice colourful portrait, showing interesting colour range - with a nice diffused background. The purple shading appears random!   Posted: 07/09/2026 11:55:41

Yes that S Curve definitely makes a nice composition. I do like the flip and your crop, as well as the background color being more green.
There are some artefacts that are not present in the original, on the right edge above the bill tip. There's a smudge of red, and what looks like an echo of the bill tip above it.
Nice colors, an attractive portrait.   Posted: 07/10/2026 23:17:07
