About the Image(s)
Yep, winter is back in Wisconsin, four inches of snow and zero degrees F. Currently, I am fortunate to have at least 4 pairs of Northern Cardinals visiting my backyard bird feeder stations. This young lady was gracious to stay put for a few moments for a portrait. Viewing the visitors to my feeders helps me get through the winter days and I think helps them too with a bit nourishment. Fujifilm XT3, 100-400 at 400mm (600 full frame), f5.6, ISO 800, 1/500. Processed in Lightroom using the basic sliders and Topaz Denoise.

Nice bird portrait; does she have a seed in her mouth? The bird is a little lacking in detail because she is in the shadow, so maybe you could try some brightening. This also means that the bright background competes for visual attention with the subject, which can be toned down by cropping in from the left.   Posted: 12/12/2025 16:27:51
I love these birds with the snowy, wintry background. Although it's messy, the fact that the background is "dark-ish" helps to keep it as, well, background. But I do agree that the bird would benefit from being a little brighter against that darker background. Not a whole lot, to where it looks out of place for being so different. I did a subject mask for the bird and used brightness and shadow sliders at very small amounts to make her stand out more.
I also tried increasing the overall exposure and then bringing back the highlights, which gave a different feeling version due to the overall brighter image.
Another wintry notecard candidate I'm sure!

Steve - lovely bird in an interesting setting - and enjoying its food too. I will make it 3 out of 3 in preferring the bird a bit lighter, particularly in the shadows. I like what Cindy has done.   Posted: 12/14/2025 18:34:18
