Table For Four Please by Steve Cole

July 2025 - Table For Four Please

About the Image(s)

Last month in Michigan at my favorite camping spot at Markin Glen Park in Kalamazoo. I really enjoyed observing this family all about the three small lakes, hence, I just had to share this moment with other bird lovers. I watched parents tend to these goslings as perhaps my granddaughter does with her twin babies. I do not know how many they did have originally but there are Eagles and Hawks every where near this park plus a healthy populations of snapping turtles too. As I said before I am in love with these Canadians and just cannot resist making photos of them. Hopefully I captured the tranquility I felt this morning watching this lovely small family.

Very interesting composition. The series of ripples in the water frame the birds nicely and show movement as they seem to glide effortlessly. I would like to see more detail brought out in the adults' faces by brightening the shadows, if possible. Nice story telling.   Posted: 07/13/2025 15:27:10

THANKS :)
I did try to open the adults heads a bit ... I didn't like it so perhaps I need to get better with my LR masking skills. ;)   Posted: 07/20/2025 19:25:55

Steve, love this image. The horizontal ripples of the lake and your crop is perfect. You caught this Canada goose family perfectly to make a very striking image. Your image has great visual impact and interest and is perfectly exposed.   Posted: 07/17/2025 23:12:24

Hi Steve,
You've captured that family beautifully, giving us a glimpse into their behaviour, all framed by a stunning background. The ripples on the water, enhanced by the golden light, add a lovely atmosphere.

I really like the contrast between the Canadian geese and the shimmering water, and the way the chicks are protected by the parents makes the image even more heartwarming.

Such a sweet family capture. Having the goslings sandwiched between the parents tells me a nice story about protection and caring for the young. I like that all 4 heads are clearly visible with no overlaps, which for me adds to the story. The golden, rippled water makes a pretty setting.
Technically, it looks to me like the right-hand adult isn't as sharp as the other birds- which is likely due to the relatively shallow DoF at f/7.1. I'd have opted for at least f/11 for this kind of grouping to try to get them all sharp. At this image size it isn't really an issue but it might be more noticeable in a bigger size.
Such a sweet shot, thanks for sharing it!   Posted: 07/25/2025 20:33:08

Steve - this is an image that pleases the heart! Lovely. You timed it perfectly, with the two youngsters one well positioned relative to their parents and the lighting is gorgeous. Thank you for posting it here.   Posted: 07/29/2025 16:55:37
