About the Image(s)

About: One of the most sought-after birds on safari in Africa is the Lilac Breasted Roller. We were very happy on the first day in Etosha (Namibia) to find several cooperative ones, posing in nice light. Processing: Crop, increased exposure, levels. Done on a laptop so may need a bit more later. Nikon Z8, 400mm, 1/1250 f/5.6 ISO160

Nice profile shot with appealing blue background. Lively colors of the bird contrasting with the drab brown leaves. The vertical orientation works well. I've been following some over landers on Youtube who go by the name of Curt and Snow. They've been driving down west Africa in their Mercedes van, and are currently in Etosha, if you care to check them out.   Posted: 07/14/2025 00:19:23

Hi Cindy,
I'm always amazed by the incredible variety of colours birds display in their feathers, and this lilac-breasted roller is no exception with its vibrant hues. The pose is lovely, the sharp detail is beautiful, and I also really like the framing of the image.

Captures like these make me want to "rob" my retirement funds to go there. I assume on a safari it can be a bit rushed to get such capture. Great timing on your part. :)   Posted: 07/20/2025 19:12:55

Hi Steve, glad to be an inspiration :) When you do a photo safari, you are with like-minded people who all want to spend time with willing subjects. We stayed with this Roller, following it to a few different perches as it hunted, and only left when it did.   Posted: 07/20/2025 20:13:40

Cindy - Etosha is a great place to experience and photograph wildlife, especially in the dry season. You did well to get such a clean picture of this Roller on a typical dry bit of vegetation. I can't fault your picture.

I'm sure you saw many 4 legged wildlife and have many good images!   Posted: 07/29/2025 17:09:26
