About the Image(s)
Not having photographed Grebes before, we have found a lake near us in Southern England (Hampshire) that seems to have them each year. I say photographs of them at this place on social media in January when I was away, so I wasn’t expecting to see a pair with young when we went in April, but were delighted that there was a pair with young at the early stage where the young are carried on the mother’s back. Once we saw them, it was a question of getting near enough and ideally with the reflection of the green vegetation creating nice water colour. Many of the fish Dad brought were too large for the juniors to eat, so these were gobbled up by the parents. This one was OK for the juniors. I find images tell the story well taken before the fish is passed over, as the father often is in the way. Taken at 500mm (FF 1,000mm) at 1/1,600 f9.0 ISO 1,600 (after minus 0.7 compensation) using my Olympus 150-400 lens with the internal 1.25 extender activated. Developed using Lightroom and Topaz Photo Ai.

I was shooting at 10 per sec - I am always surprised how much happens in nature in 1/10th of a sec!   Posted: 05/11/2025 15:40:21
