About the Image(s)

This was taken at Zoo Miami a few years ago at their aviary exhibit. Even though the bird (not sure of its species) was fixed in one spot the furious splashing gave a sense of vigorous action. I cropped in at a point that I thought gave a balance between detailing and squeezing the bird too much. Camera Raw brought out details in the shaded areas, especially around the eye. Shot with my Nikon D500 with 70-300 mm zoom lens. Shutter speed set at around 1/2000 sec, ISO around 800. Finished off with On1 FX 8 for contrast and sharpening.

Hey Jerry, congratulations on your article in the PSA Journal, very nice images and information. Not sure of the species either, to many varieties to keep track off. You got the most important part in sharp focus and fast shutter speed kept the water drops crisp and sharp. Bruce   Posted: 03/12/2025 12:03:45

Jerry, I am trying to plan a trip to Florida in April and wondered if you might have some first hand information of places I like to visit, any info would be appreciated. I am planning on 3-4 days at St Augustine Alligator Farm, then heading to either Blue Cypress Lake, or to the West coast to Ft Desoto, Venice, and Cape Corral for the burrowing owls. I love photographing in Florida because I can photograph and not have to hunt to find great subjects. Thanks, Bruce Benson. You can also call me at 253-376-6555   Posted: 03/27/2025 21:05:30

Jerry ...Nice splash-splash capture. Fun taking these type of photos and I suspect you had fun doing it too. I have no help in the species either. :)   Posted: 03/15/2025 09:57:58

These shots are always so much fun, they give a real sense of action. You had a good shutter speed to freeze some of the water drops but also have the swoosh of water around the wings. I like the wing position captured here too. I would probably crop this slightly looser, but that's my taste.
The bird is a Crested Duck, native to South America. I've photographed them in Argentina and the Falklands.   Posted: 03/16/2025 12:26:42

Jerry, this is a well captured and presented image of action. The head is pin sharp. Yes it's a fun image but I find the amount of body in front of the head not ideal.   Posted: 03/21/2025 18:21:00
