About the Image(s)

About: Warblers are notoriously challenging to photograph since they spend most of their time flitting among the leaves and branches. So it’s a treat to find one in the open like this. The Yellow-rumps (aka Butter-butts) like to forage in the blooms of the desert broom. They must be finding bugs, but I often see little bits of the plant stuck to their beaks. Nikon Z8, 600mm, 1/2000 f/7.1, ISO800. Processing: Cropped, and a very small adjustment to bring in the end points on the levels curve.

Cindy, A very nice image of the Yellow Rump. I have not heard them call Butter Butt but that is certainly appropriate. I have one coming in to my feeders now but it has been to fast for me to get an image. Your image has nice detail, is sharp , with a nice pose and nice perch. The Yellow in the feathers really is nice with the blue sky. A very nice image indeed. Bruce   Posted: 02/06/2025 23:33:49

Thanks Bruce. The term Butter Butt is used enough here that it is the first name I think of for them now. Yes they are quick, but one nice thing about when they forage in this plant is they stay in one spot for a moment or 2. I popped off almost 100 shots of this fellow, to give you an idea how cooperative he was.   Posted: 02/09/2025 00:59:09

Cindy ... yes a very nice image capture of a bird that does not sit still very long. Last year for the first time at his location (27 years) I got a group of about dozen of these coming into my feeders for three consecutive days but I was not successful in getting an image as good as yours. Nice processing too. :)   Posted: 02/11/2025 16:29:39

Very well done image, with the pale blue and tans/golds complimenting each other. The bird is sharp and nicely exposed and balanced in terms of color. Catch light in the eye is good. Possibly crop in from the top and right a little? The yellow in the bird links up with the colors of the plants. Lovely to look at.   Posted: 02/16/2025 15:11:35

Cindy, this is truly a beautiful image of a lovely warbler - so much detail to enjoy in the feathers and vegetation. The open mouth adds to this. I just love looking at it!   Posted: 02/22/2025 00:18:40

Cindy, outstanding image especially knowing how fast and active these warblers are. I am finding that many small birds are very tough to shoot. Extremely sharp detail of the bird against the softness of the plant is nice. You really caught this bird perfectly.   Posted: 02/22/2025 00:42:19
