Cedar Waxing by Bruce Benson

February 2025 - Cedar Waxing

About the Image(s)

Cedar Waxwing: Taken in March 2012 in my Pajamas from my back yard. Each spring these waxwings have visited some berry bushes and feasted on them getting drunk on them and them roosting until they would return to the bush for more. The last few years they have been beaten to the punch by hundreds of robins that arrive in December and strip the devour thousands of berries so the waxwings do not come any more. For this image, I did not have to do many adjustments other than cropping. F4/1/800/500. Canon 1D MK III/ Canon 400 2.8

Wow this looks like a painting, and I mean that in the most positive way! The arrangement of the clusters of berries couldn't be better if you'd placed them. And of course getting one in the bird's bill is "the" shot. This would be one to print, for sure.   Posted: 02/09/2025 00:43:29

Bruce, very nice capture of a very beautiful bird. The feather detail on back appears to be very smooth like it they were polished ... but again these birds are unique in this regard. Love it that you captured the berry in beak along with clump of the berry environment.   Posted: 02/11/2025 16:44:23

Thanks Steve, the smooth detail is why they are called waxwings. Bruce   Posted: 02/17/2025 19:13:06

Very 'berry' good shot! Beautiful color balance, sharpness and pose. Perfect eye and head presentation, all framed by the background. This looks like it could be a display in a nature museum. Are the shoulders really that smooth? A shame that they have disappeared from your neighborhood.   Posted: 02/15/2025 18:15:03

Thanks Jerry, good play on words, Yes the shoulders are really smooth, thus the name of waxwing. There are two varieties in the USA one called cedar waxwing and the other bohemian waxwing. Bruce   Posted: 02/17/2025 19:15:00
