February 2025 - Sandhill Cranes

About the Image(s)

I took this picture of Sandhill Cranes in December, 2024 on a visit to New Mexico, Bernardo Waterfowl area. Thousands of birds migrate to this area for the winter. It was a great experience to see so many birds.
Sony 7RV camera, Sony 100-400 mm lens. Settings: ISO 500, 400 mm, f/8, 1/2000 sec, handheld.

Marian - Tack sharp! Colors are good and background is nice and soft and nice color on the forehead. Did you see any dancing? I wish the birds were more flying across or more towards you. Did you get any in that perspective?   Posted: 02/11/2025 00:36:55

Dave, I did see dancing, mostly at sunrise when it's dark and "performers" are surrounded by many other birds. Hard to separate them from the crowd. Flight direction was also challenging - birds flight in the direction of the wind and during my 2 days visit I was often on the wrong side of the pond. Captured many "butt" shots.   Posted: 02/11/2025 20:29:06

Unfortunately I get a way to many Butt shots as well - it is a dance to go for lighting or with the breeze to your back - UGH.   Posted: 02/11/2025 21:46:44

Marina, I love the interaction of the two sandhill cranes. While you do see the back end of the cranes, I think it is interesting to see all sides of this beautiful bird. It might be a stronger photo if there was less overlap of the birds though. I also find it difficult to isolate just two birds and still show interaction. The cropping is nicely done and I like the detail in the feathers.
