About the Image(s)
I was in Yellowstone the first 10 days of the New Year. Temp during the day was a mild 18 degrees and at night dropped to 6.
This is a shot of a Bison, not buffalo. Bison are in North America while Buffalo are in Africa and other places.
Camera Nikon Z8, with a 1.4 converter and using a 400mm f2.8 lens. Affective mm 550 at F7.2, ISO 1000, at 1/1000 second with my ev setting -2 two stops . Conditions were snowing and had to manually focus as the auto was trying to focus on the snow.
Post - cropped, adjusted exposure, shadows.

Winter in Yellowstone - on the top of my wish list. I love the head on shot. Snow certainly adds interest.
On my screen image looks a bit noisy. Is it intentional and you want this grainy look? Otherwise, Topaz DeNoise does a great job.   Posted: 02/11/2025 20:46:57

Marina - Thank you - it was a great trip and itching to go back tomorrow.
Yes I did use DeNoise. The original is 46 MB and the one you are looking at is around 787kb - a lot of detail is just not there.   Posted: 02/11/2025 21:44:48

I love the head on bison with his tongue out in the snow. The soft focus gives the image an ethereal feel. What a wonderful experience you had! I can't wait to experience this myself. I think shooting any animal in the distance while it is snowing is difficult to get a crisp image.
Yes, I too have to educate many people on the difference between an African buffalo and a bison!
