About the Image(s)

A recent local sailboat race was cancelled due to heavy rain. I captured this dispirited racer returning to
shore. To better represent the feelings of the moment, I converted the photograph to black and white,
replaced the sky with an image in my library from Key West, then straightened and flipped the
horizontal plain. Finally, I reduce noise using Topaz DeNoise AI. Camera data: Nikon Z7ii, f/9, 1/1000,
380mm, ISO=500

Charles, as a life-long competitive sailor (mostly small boat racing), I was drawn to your image. Your editing has been masterful, turning a drab image into an exciting photo. The viewer can easily see that your subject has has a tough day and probably experienced a capsize or worse. Did you consider putting the red back in the subject's jacket?

Mark, yes, like you, I considered keeping the red jacket. I will make a version with it. Thank you for the kind comments.   Posted: 09/12/2023 09:01:25

Hi Charles, Thanks for sharing. I appreciate the clever decision to flip the image, which guides the viewers' gaze from left to right. Additionally, the incorporation of sun rays complements this alteration beautifully.   Posted: 09/30/2023 10:36:35

Hi Charles. You have transformed a non-de image into a powerful and compelling B&W image. Like Quang I always feel more comfortable with action heading left to right and the other elements you introduced bought it alive. You have achieved a strong contrast from Black to White with a good range of grey tones, and the white sail on the boat really pops. Its now a great image.   Posted: 09/30/2023 22:54:55
