About the Image(s)
Two years ago, one of the worst wildfires in North America destroyed over a third of Jasper
National Park. The quaint hamlet of Jasper was not spared; 2,300 residents had to be
evacuated and relocated. After wildfires, forests, streams and lakes, in recovery, undergo what
biologists call secondary succession. The image submitted this month is of Annette Lake in
secondary succession. I wanted to capture resilience in nature, a visual metaphor of what we
all must do when disaster occurs in our lives. To render the final image, I cropped it, brought
out the highlights and raised the shadows and adjusted the color to emphasize the turquoise
shade that characterizes so many beautiful lakes in the Canadian Rockies. Camera data: Nikon
