About the Image(s)

Two years ago, one of the worst wildfires in North America destroyed over a third of Jasper
National Park. The quaint hamlet of Jasper was not spared; 2,300 residents had to be
evacuated and relocated. After wildfires, forests, streams and lakes, in recovery, undergo what
biologists call secondary succession. The image submitted this month is of Annette Lake in
secondary succession. I wanted to capture resilience in nature, a visual metaphor of what we
all must do when disaster occurs in our lives. To render the final image, I cropped it, brought
out the highlights and raised the shadows and adjusted the color to emphasize the turquoise
shade that characterizes so many beautiful lakes in the Canadian Rockies. Camera data: Nikon
Z7, f/8, 1/320, 24mm, ISO=400

Hey Charles. Very nice image. I was thinking a little off the bottom and the right might give this more of a different composition. I do not like rules, but lately I have been working on my rule of thirds, because Most people bring it up when looking at images. I tried this in monochrome, and it was not, in my opinion, the way to go. I am not sure if the trees on the right side might need to be left in, to give the viewer a sense that they are looking at the side of the lake. It's all subjective. Nice image.   Posted: 07/13/2026 20:56:04

I strongly agree with your comments. The image needed a different crop. There's too much lake and the trees on the right added so little. Using a mask to slightly darken the left side might improve the composition too. Thanks Don.   Posted: 07/14/2026 03:06:27
