About the Image(s)
A couple years ago, I took a series of photographs inside the dilapidated Eastern State Penitentiary.
While recently reviewing them, the idea of inserting a living thing into this dead space occurred to me.
So, after doing a lot of cropping and filling in the open door, I inserted the image of a feral dog I
captured in 2016 in Havanna Cuba. For dramatic effect, all but the mutt was converted to black &
white. The image has a lot of texture and grain, which I feel adds to its emotional tone. What do you
think? Camera data: Nikon 7Zii, f/8, 1/20, 120mm, ISO=1600.

Both shots are very interesting, but I believe they are different.
I like the original very much. I have a personal preference for architectural shots empty of human or animal life. In this original, the brightly lighted windows serve as focal points. I do not find the dog a success to do the same. Also, a bit too much contrast in the dog shot. I prefer the somber tones of the original.   Posted: 03/04/2025 14:52:44

Charles: Wonderful work. I like the addition of the dog; to me it represents life in a place of desolation and decay and immediately draws the eye in.

Kudos on getting the lines mostly square in both the original photo and the followup to Stephen's comment. That is something I never really paid attention to until a training I did with PSA. Spot on!
The door and the dog change the mood of the photo for me. Something of hope or life versus the original being a feeling of despair. The follow up to Stephen's question I think adds to the feeling of despair as the photo is not centered.
Not something I normally think about - but I like where you are going with these!   Posted: 03/23/2025 04:24:01

Nice shot! The original image, with its outstanding top lighting, has a beautifully striking effect.   Posted: 03/31/2025 16:45:07
