This is taken at the north overlook for Cedar Breaks National monument. I have a series attempting to get a good sunset photo over the amazing colors and rocks. Each photo is different with the final exposures showing a lot of false colors that don’t look as good as I was hoping for. This one with a high sun exposes the rock showing the different colors. I also liked the clouds showing a little color overt the rocks. A leading line of the rocks leading to the sun is also a plus for this frame (not so with the others). A few localized edits were added to remove some of the color in the mid frame as the sunset was producing some false blue colors.

Brian, this image is composed nicely with the strata in the rocks leading the eye to the sunset. It is unfortunate the sunset did not give you the colors you imagined. You might try using the object selection tool in PS to capture just the sky, copy, then paste it, then use the color mixture tools in Camera Raw filter to tweak the colors and dim the the bright sun. When done, flatten the layer you created.   Posted: 12/14/2024 01:33:10

Hi Brian. Merry Christmas. You have captured an interesting composition that deserves additional processing. Its a difficult time of night to capture and overall it feels very flat. I would be tempted to rotate the image down on the L/H side to give the horizon a horizontal perspective. I accept that the mountains in the distance my well be rising on the left but visually it doesn't fit comfortably. Some dodging and burning through the snow covered landscape would remove the flatness and and create depth and contrast. Charles has offered suggestions on the sky which are worth exploring. Cheers Brian
