Panorama: Super Storm Cell in Nebraska by Jennifer Marano

July 2024 - Panorama: Super Storm Cell in Nebraska

About the Image(s)

This photo is a panorama of a super storm cell in Nebraska. I put 5 photos together in Lightroom and messed with the horizon and some other stuff in Photoshop because it was quite distorted and a bit uneven.

Very dramatic picture of how awesome Mother Nature can be!

However, I find the aesthetics a bit artificial in this presentation ... it seems there is too much "structure", in my opinion.

Of course, unless this is the results of (also) blending multiple images? Can you (elaborate) on post-production methodology used here? Thanks, Jennifer.   Posted: 07/09/2024 21:28:53

Each of the 5 shots was a 42 megapixel image with a about a 1/3 overlap of each image, so there was a fair amount of structure to begin with. Those midwestern clouds are pretty amazing in their appearance - none of that fuzzy coastal structure. I did do some denoising and sharpening in Lightroom - perhaps too much - but this is a fair representation of what I experienced.   Posted: 07/09/2024 21:57:22

Very interesting workflow .. and I can see where the extra "structure" may have manifested itself, but yes, for the most part (as seen on TV Storm Chasers), these formations can often seem fantastical instead of something we expect from reality. Well done!   Posted: 07/11/2024 01:24:22

Although I can't put my finger on exactly why - when I view this image - it looks a bit artificial/surreal. Might be because I've never seen a scene like this? Or your stitching together five frames (you don't state the focal length) - even overlapping - creates a field of view that is unnatural. I like that you placed the horizon low. The foreground of the dormant fields works well. You have become a storm chaser!   Posted: 07/12/2024 08:51:13
