About the Image(s)

During a May trip to Ireland, I had an opportunity to tour the Waterford Crystal showroom and production facility. I didn't appreciate how manual the whole process is - with individual items having hundreds of cuts; each of which must be perfect. This master cutter was oblivious to the chaos (other craftsmen working, noise, tours, cameras, etc.) around him - totally focused on his work. See close-up of his hands submitted this month to Group 86.

Technical: iPhone 14. Ambient light. 24mm (equiv) lens. Edits in Lr/Ps and B&W conversion in Silver Efex.

An absolutely perfect shot definitely showing concentration. The BW conversion adds to the overall effect, along with his gaze and furrowed brow. Beautiful. Great cell phone capture.   Posted: 07/03/2024 17:51:59

Nicely done, Steve!

B&W goes so well will most portraits, but even more engaging with these more detailed, perhaps, analytical subjects/compositions. Beautiful range of shade within the tonal gamut ... love it!   Posted: 07/04/2024 10:59:51

Agree B and W is best. You were intentional about making sure the lights on the ceiling were not overlapping his head, and you got a low angle which is great technique and makes it an environmental portrait rather than a quick grab shot. Really nice.

"Wow!" I like this image. Your B&W conversion is right on. If this were my image it would very soon be hanging on my wall.   Posted: 07/05/2024 14:08:06

Great image! The B&W conversion for this is excellent and adds to the story. The tonal range is very well done. The overall composition is perfect...the craftsman is looking down at this work of art and we, the viewer, are looking up at him. Very interesting and thought provoking. I agree with Chan that this should be printed and hanging on a wall. Thanks for sharing!   Posted: 07/08/2024 12:57:23

Fabulous image, Steven. And with a phone camera! You did a great job with the B&W conversion. The B&W really brings out the intense concentration in the man's expression. The closeup of the hands was excellent also.   Posted: 07/09/2024 22:54:36
