Lake Superior Shoreline by Dale Yates

September 2023 - Lake Superior Shoreline

About the Image(s)

Image Description: This image of the Lake Superior shoreline was taken last year while vacationing in northern Michigan. While on-site I noted the massive amount of driftwood on the shore which I attempted to capture in this landscape image. My goal with this photo is for the viewer to also note this driftwood and ponder how it all got there and how long did it take.

This image was taken with the following: RAW format; Canon 90D camera; Tamron 18-200, f/3.5-6.3 zoom lens; aperture f/11; shutter speed 1/320 ISO 200; focal length 18mm. Post processing was done in Lightroom.

Interesting image - I like that you have a foreground, mid-ground and background - each with a different tonality/texture. Nice sharp image! One suggestion might be to get low and closer to the driftwood. In my mind that's the most interesting part of our image - and occupies only a small part of the frame. Some of the pieces are very interesting - appearing to be emerging from the sand.   Posted: 09/10/2023 03:54:11

You and Lance seem to have teamed up to present us three interesting beach scenes. I like the interesting sky and the fact you placed the horizon in the lower half of the image. The driftwood adds a lot of interest. There is also what appears to have been supporting posts for a pier that would have extended out into the water.   Posted: 09/11/2023 18:10:00

Thanks Chan, I appreciate your comments! Out of curiosity I did look at the remanent of the pier. I didn't see any more details to determine what was there at one time. My guess is most of it washed away during one the many storms in that area. Thanks again!   Posted: 09/12/2023 08:18:03

Beach images are bringing on nostalgia for summer and it isn't even officially over! I like the contrast between the wild driftwood and the remnants of the pier or whatever, which seem to be returning to the wild. I agree with Steven about getting closer to the driftwood and lower, and perhaps it might be worth a try to see how more beach and less sky would look. It is interesting to see a lake beach with some of the characteristics usually seen on ocean beaches.   Posted: 09/11/2023 20:28:36

Thanks Jennifer, I appreciate your comments! I agree that a better angle and a closer shot may in order here. Something to be conscious of for the next photo.   Posted: 09/12/2023 08:20:10

Dale, this is well composed and exposed. It is also nice to see a perfect horizon in a scene such as this ... so often this is not the case.
