About the Image(s)

This Japanese garden in Nara was composed to maximize beauty, so no ugly “Keep Off” signs ??“ just beautiful rocks with lovely, braided twine, strategically placed! My “before” photo shows the placement of one of these signs. This was taken on the first day of my recent trip to Japan, and it set the tone of the trip perfectly.

Technical: OM 1 Mark 2 camera with 12 ??“ 100 mm lens, ISO 200, 66 mm, f/4, 1/60 sec, hand held.

I love this! It is in sharp focus with the background slightly blurred. The conversion to BW gives it a much more abstract look   Posted: 12/05/2025 03:26:03

I had no idea of this tradition/marker. So much gentler (and likely respected!) than our "KEEP OFF" signs. You explanation helps a lot. Unfortunately your main image doesn't tell me a story - perhaps, because I don't know what it is. It looks like some rope around a stone or ball of yarn. Doesn't hold my interest. Your original tells more a story (especially for those who understand the symbolism) - but even there the rock is too small/dark to have a prominent impact. I played with a crop/exposure adjustment; not sure it worked.   Posted: 12/11/2025 11:57:12

Very nice image! I like the sharpness and detail throughout. Also, the conversion to black and white is perfect for this image. The title of this photo tells me what it is about and causes me to want to investigate further (I'm generally curious). My only suggestion is to include a little more of the bridge to add context. Very nice...thanks for sharing!   Posted: 12/11/2025 15:09:33

We may debate the crop for this image, but you are the creator of this art piece. It is your vision.
As I view your art piece, I am struck by the excellent quality of your B&W conversion. I enjoy the texture of the rock as well as that of the twisted rope.
The excellent blurring of the background causes the subject rock and rope stand out.   Posted: 12/14/2025 20:14:31
