Purple Iris by Will Korn

July 2025 - Purple Iris

About the Image(s)

I took a walk around the neighborhood photographing flowers in the Spring. When it came to postprocessing, I went a little nuts.

1. Purple Iris
F/2.8; 1/1250s; ISO 400; 85mm macro
2. Tree bark with moss in the bright sun, out-of-focus.
Same exposure.

Happy summertime to everyone.

I really appreciate this image as a work of art. Without your explanation, I would have had a difficult time knowing what it is. I find that the curved, downward sweeping lines that meet on the lower center of the image, along with the narrow brightness of the interior of the flower, draw my eyes deep into the image. Well done.   Posted: 07/05/2025 17:48:14

The image is very artistic, almost abstract, and kind of hypnotic. The f/2.8 aperture makes for a shallow depth of field, which is perfect for this flower. I am a bit confused about your reference to tree moss and bark - the out of focus areas surrounding the flower are so magenta, I can't see it as moss, even knowing it is there. Is this a composite?   Posted: 07/05/2025 20:31:26

Very artistic image! The sharpness at the center immediately catches my attention, and the curved lines direct my eyes through the image. In my opinion this is a very nice abstract work of art. Thanks for sharing!   Posted: 07/06/2025 15:02:16

No clue what I'm looking at - but that makes it interesting - as my mind seeks an explanation. The image has a soft feel - I like the depth and range of focus (from tack sharp - to blurry). Almost feels like we're getting drawn into the scene - wondering where this all leads. Kudos to you for creating a very different image of an Iris!   Posted: 07/06/2025 15:28:43

A very well conceived abstract of the Iris. The curved leading lines bring the eye to the center bottom of the image, which is tack sharp, in contrast to the rest of the flower. I, too, would not have known what the image actually is without your explanation. I don't think you went too far in your post processing. I think it is a beautiful abstract. Good job. Makes me want to experiment as well.   Posted: 07/06/2025 16:50:41

I have posted the two images that were combined to make this image. The first is the iris. The second is an out of focus image showing highlights of some moss glowing in the sun.   Posted: 07/08/2025 19:00:37
