While vacationing on Mackinaw Island a couple of years ago, my wife and I took a horse drawn carriage ride throughout the island. These are the three horses that took us on our ride. My goal with this photo is to capture the details and the beauty of these animals. I normally convert my images to B&W via Silver Efex Pro 2. However I was experimenting with the B&W feature in LR and decided to run with it.
Post production was performed in LR, including conversion to black & white as noted above.
This image was taken with the following: RAW format; Canon 90D camera; Tamron 18-200mm, f/3.5-6.3 zoom lens; aperture f/8; shutter speed 1/500; ISO 320; focal length 158mm; hand held

I like the details idea and that you also simplified the scene to show these beautiful animals. Black and white is an excellent choice as I am sure there is greenery in the background that would have been distracting. Well done.   Posted: 02/03/2025 22:58:42

Agree with Will that B&W was good choice. I like that there are an odd number of horses; good detail of the harnesses. My only suggestion would be to look for more interesting activity (realizing you can't control that) - perhaps the animals interacting with one another, with the owner, eating, etc. Similar to bird photography - those activities add interest.   Posted: 02/04/2025 10:09:34

Very nice image, Dale. With both Lightroom and Photoshop in my bag of tools, I no longer use Silver Effects Pro. You have used Lr well.
Steven suggests some alternat visions for the image. I like the vision you have, and I like the moment of rest these three carriage horses are enjoying.
Perhaps a slight degree of added contrast would be nice, but I am not sure.   Posted: 02/04/2025 16:28:02

Thanks Chan, I appreciate your insight! I'll definitely look into more contrast on this.   Posted: 02/04/2025 21:58:28

The fact that there were 3 horses surprised me. What did you think about the difference between the Lr BW and Silver Effects? Did you do it in both to see the difference? The horses and harnesses are tack sharp, and even the horses' eyelashes are sharp. You can see the dappling in the horses. I agree with Chan about a slight amount of contrast or even dehaze. I may overuse dehaze.   Posted: 02/04/2025 18:54:51

Thanks Cindy! I will look into more contrast in this image. As far as LR or Silver Efex Pro, for me LR seems a little easier to use. Silver Efex Pro seems to have more presets for variations for the image, such as Low Contrast, High Contrast, Fine Art, etc. I did not work this image with Silver Efex Pro, only LR.   Posted: 02/04/2025 22:04:02
