Cabo da Roca Lighthouse by Steven Jungerwirth

February 2025 - Cabo da Roca Lighthouse

About the Image(s)

Located in Sintra, Portugal - this lighthouse sits 600 feet above the Atlantic. It began operating in 1772.

Any thoughts re: composition? There was limited access and I thought it was important to include the cliff/ocean. Other on-line images zoom in on the structure, but I find those less interesting.

Technical
Canon 24-105 f4 lens at 24mm. ISO 100, f4.0, 1/2000 sec.

This is so nice. I am not going to tell you to step a little to the left! You had to keep the whole scene intact because the cliff, the lighthouse and the see provide both a clear near- mid- and foreground but also the shore creates a nice leading line. My only suggestion: try to punch it up a bit. Use dehaze followed by a small white boost. Probably would exclude the sky from this adjustment.   Posted: 02/03/2025 22:57:07

Thank you! I agree the lighthouse should pop more. I'll experiment with brightening the light house - and perhaps slightly darkening the sky behind.   Posted: 02/04/2025 10:06:08

Steven, what a very nice image! In do agree with much of what Will had to say but be very careful with dehaze. As I view the image, the large cliff tries to steal the show. It is the largest object in the image, and the most colorful. Yes, the lighthouse needs to be punch up a bit if it is going to be the star of the show. Darkening the sky a bit (dehaze might work here if you don't overdo it) might help the lighthouse to stand out.   Posted: 02/04/2025 16:17:01

This is a quick revision, but you can see the direction I was going.   Posted: 02/04/2025 17:13:10

Tx Chan - I like what you did! At this point my image is so heavily edited (and many edits were destructive) - that I'm going to wait for a rainy day - then go back to the original raw file and start from scratch - with a better vision for what I want the final to look like.   Posted: 02/06/2025 11:43:36

This is a beautiful image. I do like what Chan did with the image. I am so impressed with the vision and skill all of you have.

Chan, what did you mean about being careful with dehaze? I know it will make the sky look a strange blue if you go too far.   Posted: 02/04/2025 18:50:12

Yes, it will do strange things if you go too far. Most of what people try to do with it is better done by adjusting exposure on a local adjustment (Selection).   Posted: 02/04/2025 20:35:34

Steven...This is a very appealing photo. I like the entire scene as you have captured it. I agree that the lighthouse should possibly stand out a little more. I also like the haze in the sea and background as it adds a little mystery to the photo. As such, I would recommend keeping the haze as a part of the overall image. Excellent image, thanks for sharing this!   Posted: 02/04/2025 22:26:01
