"Chin of Europe" by Steven Jungerwirth

January 2025 - "Chin of Europe"

About the Image(s)

Sagres, Portugal

This region of Portugal is referred to as the "chin of Europe" - as it juts out into the Atlantic. It is the Western-most land in Europe - quite close to Morocco/African continent.

iPhone 14. Crop to 16:9 aspect ratio and added vignette.

Happy New Year, Steve! The 16:9 ratio looks good here.

The scene is one that, for me, initiates a sense of solitude: where I imagine sitting or standing on this bluff without moving for several minutes to take in and contemplate the beauty that lays before me.

A wonderful example where less creates a sense of more, or engagement: where sometimes a less cluttered composition reveals more, and connects to us more deeply. And I must admit, the colors, in this example, awakens the senses, a B&W version would change the emotional attraction I described dramatically (differently).

Well visualized and presented!   Posted: 01/01/2025 14:14:48

I am afraid of heights so I would never have stood so close to that cliff. Golly. I like the image especially the pattern of the shoreline jutting into the ocean repetitively.
It's very sharp throughout. It might be a bit bottom heavy with the foreground stony area, would you consider cropping in just a bit from the bottom left?   Posted: 01/01/2025 14:48:12

I don't have great balance and fear heights/falling. In this case - I felt safe. Interestingly - the guide we were with warned us to be careful - he said people die there each year - often tourists framing a scene through their camera lens and losing track of where they are standing. Such venues (cliff edges/no railings) seem more common in EU vs. the US; I suspect due to our litigious environment.   Posted: 01/02/2025 15:43:12

Very serene image that causes me to pause and relax. Excellent details throughout and great handling of color. This is a landscape that speaks to us, telling us to slow down, to relax, to ponder...thanks for sharing!   Posted: 01/01/2025 15:46:47

Beautiful landscape. As Will mentioned, you can see the pattern of the shoreline, separated from the other parts. The foreground's texture is very sharp. I do not see the vignetting. The clouds make the background look dreamy, as opposed to the sharpness of the foreground.

I'm pleased you don't see the vignette . . . that suggests it's subtle and not over done.   Posted: 01/02/2025 15:35:50

Steven, this is a very interesting and well-presented image. There is so much here to like. I could stop here but have promised to suggest other approaches you could consider.
As I looked at the image, I felt that there was more color in the rocks that might add to the presentation. I may have gone a little too far as I tried to bring out the color using the point color tool in ACR (Ps or LrC.)

Thanks Chan - I appreciate your comments and suggestion to bring more color to the rocks. In your edit - I think the rocks have a greenish hue and are darker. I find the original more pleasing and consistent with what I saw. I will explore other edits - to bring more interest to the rocks.   Posted: 01/02/2025 15:39:14

As I indicated, I may have gone too far. The effect could be toned down. I was not there when you recorded this image, and I do not know what you saw.
Your original is a very well-done image. I would like to see a little attention given to the rocks.   Posted: 01/02/2025 18:57:42
