About the Image(s)
Technical: Olympus micro four thirds camera, 12 ??“ 105 mm lens at 42 mm, ISO 1600, f/4.0, 1/60 sec.
The bayous were spooky, especially with the unsettled weather and occasional rain. The murky waters and hanging Spanish moss were brightened somewhat by the fall colors, but still mysterious.
There were many jokes about banjo music as we drifted among the bald cypress trees and other swamp growth.

Jennifer, it does scream "Deliverance!" A beautiful image, with the cypress tree reflected in the water. The colors are muted more in the background and more vivid on the tree. I like that. Was it intentional? My eye is drawn to what looks like a path to the right of the tree. There is another one to the left, both of which lead to mystery. I love the moss. Great image.   Posted: 12/04/2024 16:13:35

Hi Cindy! Thanks for your comments. I think the muting of the background was a natural effect. I was so glad you noticed the pathish area to the right of the tree - my favorite part of the image. If I could go back there I would definitely recompose to emphasize that more, but at the time I was focused on the tree itself. It was an interesting place to photograph.   Posted: 12/04/2024 16:42:18

Jennifer, what a wonderful image! I picture myself in a bass boat just outside of the frame. I make a soft cast of my lure right up against the base of that tree and make a slow retrieval while waiting for that large bass to envelope the lure into its mouth.
It is the trunk of the tree as it enters into the water that interests me most. Well done.   Posted: 12/06/2024 21:59:06

Thanks Chan! There were a number of people fishing in the bayous - the area is very popular for lots of recreational activities. Yes, the trunk and the reflection are both interesting.   Posted: 12/07/2024 00:12:15

Very nice image - love the soft color palette and the reflection. I wish there was more reflection (it's so good!) . . . perhaps a third of the frame. Trunk is interesting. As an aside - I believe you were shooting Sony - do you like the Olympus? I'm thinking about it as a lighter/smaller alternative to the full frame Canon. Thoughts?   Posted: 12/07/2024 20:34:06

Hi Steven,
I was so torn between reflections and moss - I have images of both, but overall I really loved the moss more.
I am really enjoying the Olympus. It is so much lighter and the images are pretty sharp. It can also do a lot of stuff like double exposures and focus stacking that I can't do with the Sony. And pro-capture (it should be called pre-capture) which is great for moving subjects since it saves images from before you press the shutter. The Sony images are better, since it is full frame and higher megapixels, but I can do a lot with Olympus images in post-processing. Olympus is so much easier to handle and travel with. I just upgraded to the new OM 1 Mark II, so now have 2 olympus bodies, which is great for photo workshops where I don't want to be changing lenses in the field. I may sell my Sony body and lenses if the new model is as good as I think it will be!   Posted: 12/07/2024 23:51:58

Thank you - my wife has the OM-1 Mk II - an impressive camera. It's noticeably lighter (esp the longer lens) than a full-frame format. I may take the plunge.   Posted: 12/09/2024 11:45:21

This is a fabulous image of a tree. It stands alone literally and figuratively. Your image gives a mood and a sense of place, without the need to tell a particular story, although banjos are clearly stage left. Well done.   Posted: 12/08/2024 01:13:28
