July 2024 - Two Ladies And A Cloud

I took this picture 3 weeks ago on Claytor lake. I'm working on a photo book about Appalachia of which one chapter is dedicated to the people and culture.
I intended to pass along the "lifestyle" of people living in Appalachia. Their activities, the speed of life, the surroundings and isolation.
As usual, setting it to B&W. Aperture priority on Nikon Z7_ii camera with a 40mm lens @f13 ; S 1/400; ; iso 250 ; On the edit I increased contrast and adjusted levels.

The quintessential vernacular record in photography: here, a common scene/activity duplicated all across the world, indeed.
The power to make this otherwise common scene create interest is the placement of the Cloud: seemingly overhead purposefully watching over and ready to protect the two swimmers below ... also, an interesting juxtaposition between the cloud, distant forest and our two foreground swimmers. Terrific visualization/presentation!
Caveat: some will mark this single frame (viewed alone) as uninteresting or lack narrative ... though partially true, such work should then spark your creative juices to search and visualize other like images in forming a collection ... and in that instant the work become more relevant, indeed.
But you are already aware of this as you currently enjoy creating work within your Reflection series of work.

Hi Adi. Something different from you - I like it! Very nicely visualized. It brought back memories of when I was a kid, passing lazy summer days at a friend's lake cabin. Your exposure & post-processing are spot on (as usual). For sure, the cloud makes the image. It's as if it the two ladies invited it to tag along for the day. Well done, indeed. This is the great capture of the precious moment. I feel like the scene can disappear at any time, the cloud could disappear or the floaters could drift out of the frame. The sharp contrast between the white and black is also very interesting to me. Posted: 07/10/2024 05:24:11
