Description - This portrait is a little different from my usual work. I almost always reach for my 105mm lens when shooting portraits, but this time I challenged myself to use a 50mm instead.I also kept the lighting simple, relying only on the natural light coming through the window.
Camera settings - Nikon D800, 50mm, f/2, 1/160s, ISO 500

H, A fresh approach ! very nice. The background tells a lot of the person and adds to the story. You can find exceptionally good examples in the National Geographic magazine's portraits from late 80's I just reviewed a few yesterday. My only comment is to have the subject a bit more to the right. It seems like a white line sticking up from her head. An easy fix and a very good portrait.

Adi, thank you so much! I'm really grateful for the recommendation about the National Geographic portraits from the late '80s. I'm definitely going to dive into them, I love the idea of looking more closely at how the background can reveal something about the person and add another layer to the story. And I completely agree with you about the white line! I noticed it as well. I considered moving the subject a little, but I felt that I would lose some of the symmetry in the background, so in the end I just decided to keep her where she is and live with the line.

Subject off center is better than centered. Kodak issued 2 books for portrait photography in the early 80's (1983??) Which are considered the Bible of portraiture. While the big book is hard to get the small one is easier ( both used only). You may want to check as well Yousuf Karsh 1903-2002 The most famous portrait photographer, and Antoniou Platon an active Greek portrait photographer leading the industry in his contemporary approach. This is a beautiful photo! I love the light on the side of her face and hair and her reflection on the table. Only thing I would do is crop in closer to lose some of the distraction in the background. Very pretty! Posted: 08/12/2026 18:09:47
I really appreciate having the background for this portrait, Hanna. The only item that may need attention is her nose. It looks like something is pasted on it?

And about the nose, you're absolutely right that it catches the eye. It's actually just the model's natural nose anatomy, which was emphasized by the light coming in through the window. Thank you again!
