About the Image(s)

This picture was taken at Calloway Gardens on an early December evening.
When I saw this group of trees, I was immediately struck by the imagery of their marching down to the lake for a dip! I chose to convert to B&W to enhance the idea of this caricature.

I am not sure I was successful capturing the sense of motion. Subtle differences in the crop (I attached 2) seem to make a significant difference. Optimizing the contrast has also been challenging. I would appreciate comments and recommendations from the. team.

The image was captured with Cannon 6D Mark II, 18-35 mm 2.8 lens and the following settings: focal length 27 mm, 1/80 sec, f 6.3, ISO160. Initial crop and post processing was done in cameral raw. B&W conversion was done with NIK silver efex. Final adjustments and crop were done in Photoshop Elements.

Elise, the potential of the picture is big the the execution is good. I wonder if you walked around the tree grove and this was the best angle to isolate them from the surrounding ?   Posted: 03/09/2025 08:42:08

Thank you for your comments, Adi.
I did explore a few different angles without success. I wanted a low capture to optimize downward slope of the trees without shooting directly into the rapidly setting sun. But, there certainly could have been something better. Perhaps morning rather than evening..   Posted: 03/09/2025 11:21:39

Hi Elsie

I think you chose the correct angle for your composition - which was obviously well thought out. I might have tried to bring out a broader range of tones and more contrast in post…but that's just my artistic bias. While it is cool that you captured it, the crescent moon is so tiny as to be more of a distraction than an enhancement of your otherwise nice composition. Had you wanted to make the moon more prominent, backing way up and using a telephoto lens would have compressed the distance and made the moon appear larger.   Posted: 03/17/2025 19:08:36

You are correct, Michael.
The moon was not top of mind. I really wanted the right angle in the right light which was slipping away very fast!   Posted: 03/17/2025 21:34:32
