Yugen Experienced in Nature by Lance Lewin

January 2025 - Yugen Experienced in Nature

About the Image(s)

Digitally registered in Central Florida, 2024. (The main subject is actually growing and extending up from the shoreline of a lake).

Associate Professor Nancy G. Hume speaking from her book on Japanese aesthetics and culture … we see how East-Asian culture viewed … ‘allusiveness over explicitness and completeness’ ...

This notion of beauty found in the "imperfect" or alternatively, within the realm of mystery, are aesthetic ideals I attempt to present viewers in my current work (2017 to the present). Hope you enjoy the experience of contemplating the nature of the subjects shape, and perhaps where it extends into the void.

The work was edited in PSCC and Silver Efex Pro-3.

Lance, your minimalist composition achieves your goal quite successfully. I am intrigued by the lighting on the subject against the pure black background and am curious how you achieved this from a subject in its natural setting rather than in a studio. The curvilinear shapes are pleasing to my eye and create a sense of mystery.   Posted: 01/08/2025 16:41:36

A bit more "processed" than I normally do ... and one of the key tools was the "Soft Contrast" contrast adjustment in Silver Efex Pro-3.Then I "Burned" areas I felt were not dark enough. Just playing around!! Thanks, Michael!   Posted: 01/09/2025 17:51:07

Hi Lance,
First of all, as you are leaving the group, I would like to say thank you very much for everything you have done. It was a great treat to have you lead the discussions and studies. Thank you for the encouragement and feedback you have given me during my 18 months of participation in the group. Your insights into the art of photography will certainly influence and inspire me to improve and get better than ever. Best wish to you.

As always, this image is very inspirational to me, as I have always tried to use or produce soft light on still-life alike subjects. Your image presents elegance and mystery, giving me a lot of food for thought.

I enjoy following the gradations of light along this image. My only suggestion is to consider toning down the highlights along the curves.

Thank you, Lance!   Posted: 01/12/2025 03:55:47

Interesting, engaging, dynamic, negative space, are all words that come to me looking at your picture. I think I see a leave at the top but I am not sure. Not sure what to think....   Posted: 01/20/2025 23:09:18

Yes, a bit different kind of visual experience, well, at least from me. Indeed, that is, a leaf.   Posted: 01/21/2025 22:08:09

Hi Lance! This is wonderful. I actually like the brighter highlights along the curves because they suggest a surge of energy to me and add a sense of mystery. Thanks so much for sharing this one.   Posted: 01/21/2025 00:20:52

Hi Charissa! Thank you for stopping by! I always appreciate your critiques.

Indeed, the brightness in this part of the image does imbue a sense of energy! From the lower portion, the brightness slowly diminishes fading into oblivion!
