Lost in Thought by Laurie McShane

August 2026 - Lost in Thought

About the Image(s)

We were at Lower Fort Garry near Winnipeg, Canada, and this sweet young woman in period costume agreed to pose for me in front of a window. This was taken at ISO 2500; 24mm; F/8; and 1/200 sec.

I adjusted the shadows in LR, and made a few other basic adjustments. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

Looks considerably like the Vermeer Milkmaid painting. You did a great job with using the diffuse window light.   Posted: 08/04/2026 06:05:04

I love black and white images and this is wonderful. The soft window lighting is excellent and the tonal range is perfect. The texture and pattern in the costume add interest and the models expression is uplifting. An inspiring image, thank you!   Posted: 08/06/2026 01:42:09

Laurie, your title fits perfectly!
The black-and-white treatment gives your photo such a timeless feeling. I love that she is looking toward the light instead of the camera. Congratulations on such an amazing photo!   Posted: 08/07/2026 13:16:02

In my mind, every aspect of what a portrait should be is thought through and captured here with distinction.   Posted: 08/07/2026 13:32:57
