About the Image(s)

A Barred Owl decided to locate her nest in the cavity of a tree near us, and it was fun to catch sight of her comings and goings a few times. There were two owlets in the nest that poked their heads out a couple times. This was taken with my 600mm and is cropped quite a bit. From the distance I was at, I couldn't tell that she had something in her mouth until I pulled it up on my laptop. This little snake had spent his whole life flat on the ground until he was scooped up for the ride of his life that day. He looks so happy seeing the trees and sky like he has never seen before! Unfortunately, little does he know......

This was taken at 600mm, ISO 6400, F7.1, and 1/500 sec. I lightened the owl a little to help her stand out, and used some dehaze and texture in Lightroom. I applied some clarity to the snake to make him more obvious. I appreciate any and all suggestions!

Wow, a great photo! It's a beautiful and interesting subject that stands out well against the background. Can't think of anything I would do differently.   Posted: 07/05/2026 22:13:48

Hi Laurie, It seems that owls are popular this month. This one is gorgeous and the snake in her mouth definitely tells a story. She is crisp from front to back and I like the catchlight in her eye.
The only suggestion I have would be to tone down the bright background on the right hand side or crop out as much of it as you can.

I tried this image as a black and white (my personal preferences showing here) I think it works surprisingly well. What do you think?   Posted: 07/06/2026 03:04:05

Thanks, Peter. I agree with toning down the background, and find the black and white interesting! I hadn't thought of that.   Posted: 07/10/2026 00:29:04

Lucky you to capture this photo with the snake in the owl's mouth! Showing all the feather details, plus the face and snake details, makes this a fascinating photo. I love owls and your photo.   Posted: 07/10/2026 01:21:36
