Spoonbill in motion by Kathleen Colligan

April 2026 - Spoonbill in motion

About the Image(s)

My photo was taken at a recent Photography Conference in Cocoa Beach, Florida. This was shot in the early morning.
I did not actually plan this shot, but I like how it accidentally turned out.
Sony A7iii F6.3, ISO 1000, 1/200 sec . Cropping is the only editing done ( so far)

Kathleen, this would be one of those "happy" accidents. Really cool action shot on this spoonbill. I'm surprised it turned out as well as it did, at 1/200 sec, which seems a bit slow for this action, but I have had those incidents too.
Perhaps some sharpening could help? I just love to see images of these beautiful birds and I wish I could have the opportunity to photograph them. Thank you for sharing.   Posted: 04/01/2026 08:28:56

What a lovely shot. The wispy softness of the wings in contrast to the relatively sharp head and feet is very appealing to me. It looks like a watercolor, and I think that with a little sharpening, it would be a standout. The tones are beautiful, and the composition is spot on. Good for you!   Posted: 04/02/2026 01:37:04

Love the way this bird is suspended in space and that his head is so calry focussed. The softness of the wings adds the sense of motion to 'him' in contrast to the crisp focus on the feet.I wish there were some background elements include too to gvie more depth and context.   Posted: 04/02/2026 01:45:59

Thank you. I wanted it to have more of the high key look plus it was taken while flying with white sky behind it.   Posted: 04/02/2026 22:30:26

Kathleen, this is a fabulous shot. My wife loves spoonbills and when we used to go to Florida, she was happy to accompany me when I went shooting in the Everglades. The composition and coloring is wonderful. I don't think you can make it any sharper - the eye, beak and feet are very sharp. The wings are soft but adds to the feel of the image. Well Done!   Posted: 04/02/2026 22:25:38

Hi Kathleen, I love this image. Beautiful colors and I like that the wings are blurred by motion. It gives the image a dynamic feel. The only thing I would have done is crop the right hand side to remove some of the white and focus attention on the bird. A wonderful picture, thank you!   Posted: 04/16/2026 21:59:52
