The Grist Mill in Sudbury by Harrison Ball

December 2025 - The Grist Mill in Sudbury

About the Image(s)

The Grist Mill in Sudbury, MA is on the ground of Longfellow’s Wayside Inns. I have found myself going back to this spot trying to capture the perfect image of the Grist Mill. The Mill is surrounded by a rustic wooden fences so I elected to exclude it by getting close to the wheel and water. The This attempt was taken with a Nikon Z 6ii with Nikon Z 24-120mm ’/4 S lens at 30mm. I didn’t have a tripod and wanted to blur the water so I hand-held at 1/10 seconds at ’/8 and ISO = 220. I post-processed the image in Lightroom Classic applying the Adaptive Color Profile and then brought it into Radiant Photo 2 where I applied the Landscape workflow and then applied a vignette. I was surprised that I could hand-hold at 1/10 second and still obtain a sharp image.

It's so challenging to handhold a shot and capture that silky smooth running water-but you nailed it!
The colors, details, and reflections all come together beautifully. Such a lovely photo!   Posted: 12/04/2025 13:36:35

Now you certainly gave youself a challenge and met it with distinction. My ey keeps going up to the bright area on the top right so I'm thinking maybe a linear gradient might keep me more in the grist mill, and whitening the water to get rid of the blue cast would gvie the image even more punch.   Posted: 12/05/2025 19:05:48

A beautiful scene well captured. I am surprised too at the sharpness with your handheld shot. In any case, it worked perfectly, including your water blur!   Posted: 12/09/2025 00:54:06
