Pestle and mortar with herbs by Angela Bonner, PPSA

July 2024 - Pestle and mortar with herbs

About the Image(s)

Taken with my Canon R5, 24-70mm lens. f/4, ISO 100

Visited a friend recently and noticed she had a pestle and mortar so managed to borrow them for a while. The background has been made from a stick on piece of wallpaper and the base is the back of a shelf from an old bookcase.
Except for little cropping and sharpening the image is as shot.

Awesome image Angela! The composition is well done and I especially love the lighting - the slight shine on the pestle and onion are like a catchlight you might see in someone's eyes!   Posted: 07/03/2024 23:33:15

A lovely arrangement of these items in to an excellent still life. I would consider tweaking it a little with an arty filter to emulate the style of the 'Old Masters'   Posted: 07/07/2024 09:52:21

Great photo again, Angela. I liked the transition of the lighter colors on the left, and darker browns on the right. the green was also a good touch.   Posted: 07/10/2024 00:03:19

Angela, well done. Well placed, well scene. Now for some suggestions. Blurring out the background just a bit, as need some separation, and the clear focus competes (especially with he wood grain - clearly above the onion and what looks like rosmary as the background almost looks like part of the subject) and makes it seem a bit flat. I like how the energy is to the left, and yet you balance it with the wooden tool leaning to the right. But these are minor suggestions that if handled I would find a very good pic to be an excellent pic.   Posted: 07/10/2024 18:16:20

Well of course it is. Now I feel terrible that I made suggestions....................not really, as this forum is for suggestions, that forum is for awards!   Posted: 07/10/2024 22:06:08

Great subject! There are so many items that are in our homes and can make a nice photo. The light is very good and allows for detail in all the items. The green of the herbs gives a nice contrast to the garlic, onions and the mortar and pestle. The background could be a little more muted so as not to distract from the subject. Very nice!   Posted: 07/10/2024 20:00:00

Wonderful composition and beautiful colors! I like the touches of green and how the light is shining on the grouping. I think I'd blur the background just a bit to see how that looks. It's a wonderful picture and congratulations on being accepted into a show!!!   Posted: 07/17/2024 00:48:49

What creativity and innovation in turning common food items into a captivating image! The lighting is nearly perfect, the placement is great, the colors pop, and the composition is engaging.

It's fascinating to think that this image evolved from a simple visit to a friend, imagining it could transform into something greater-almost metaphorically a life story.

Great job, and congratulations on the show!   Posted: 07/29/2024 15:26:04
