Coney Island by Ellen Fisch

August 2026 - Coney Island

About the Image(s)

I love Coney Island. It is usually such a riot of crowds, rides, fast food and fun souvenirs, such as inflatable mermaid balloons. On this late afternoon, the beach and boardwalk weren’t too crowded and I was glad for the cool breeze and smell of the ocean. When I saw this man, relaxing with seemingly not a care in the world, I was enchanted. This must be what tranquility truly is!

This was shot with hand-held Hand held Canon EOS 5D Mark II. ISO 250 1/125 sec. 8f. Wide Angle EF lens17-40mm 1:4
I used Photo Shop to color and crop the image

The chap really does look as if he is very relaxed and enjoying the moment.
I like the sepia tone you have given to the bottom half of the image giving it a serene vibe. In a way I wish you had gone a bit further to your right so that the chap would be looking at the scene rather than looking out of it? Of course there might have been a reason why this was not possible.
Well done.   Posted: 08/01/2026 12:39:58

What a nice composition. The warm sepia tone treatment fits the image perfectly. It reinforces the story the photo tells. A colorful image may have led to chaos, but this treatment gives it a quiet restful feel. For improvements, the horizon seems to be slightly sloping to me. Maybe this could be straightened without hurting the composition of the image.

Thanks Doug! I think straighter can be useful!   Posted: 08/04/2026 15:37:01

Beautifully composed photograph. You captured the story very well. I agree that the sepia tone was the way to go. Something to try: Crop out some of the sky. It might make the people on the beach more of the story.   Posted: 08/04/2026 00:54:14

I agree Kurt, the sky takes up a lot of the composition. Thanks!   Posted: 08/04/2026 15:38:14

Relaxing scene. Sepia adds to the calmness and easier on the eye. Straightening the sky and having less of it would improve the image. I agree with Angela that there should be a bit more space on the right side of the person on the bench. Perhaps add some canvas to the right side in Photoshop to accomplish this.   Posted: 08/09/2026 14:48:17
