About the Image(s)

"I took this photo with a Panasonic Lumix Point and Shoot. F/4.9, 1/80 second, ISO 500, 12mm. It is pure coincidence that Angela and I both chose to reflect red/orange subjects with black backgrounds. I needed to do a lot of post editing on this one. I took this in the main bathroom in my house. I placed the baseball on the top of a wine class in front of the mirror above the vanity and placed a makeup mirror behind the baseball and a bit to the side. In post processing I used Lightroom to highlight the background and brought out the blacks 50% and darkened the exposure about 50%. This made the background completely black. I then used AI in Photoshop Express to remove the wine glass from the reflections, and the frame of the makeup mirror.

You can get more information about the camera from the following link Panasonic - DC-ZS80. I wanted something that would be easier to take on ski vacations. After some research I chose this camera, and found it used, but in great shape, at a local camera shop. What I learned is that there is very little point and shoot about a point and shoot camera. Pretty much just the focusing is out of your control. You sacrifice quality on the lens, and I would not zoom in too much, but you can set f-stop, shutter speed and ISO. You can also set to fully automatic, fully manual, shutter priority or aperture priority. You can also do some bracketing. It saves the photos at 20MB. There are also other features. I used the baseball as practice to learn the camera."

A great creative shot, well done.
Very different and very well processed. I especially like the slightly out of focus ball on the far right.Really adds to the image. Clever set up. How many mirrors did you use? Cannot imagine it could be done with one mirror or am I wrong?
I tried using a bit of path blur to try and make it look as if the balls were moving. See what you think.
Well done.   Posted: 12/01/2025 15:41:16

Hi Angela. I used two mirrors. It is hard to see in the original, but one mirror is a large mirror attached to the wall in my bathroom; the other is a small oval make up mirror that I set on the countertop. I do like your version because it does give the ball some motion, but I'm very used to having things in focus, so it is a little hard to look at, at first. Thanks for the feedback.   Posted: 12/01/2025 19:49:56

Thanks for that, Kurt. Something I have not tried. My suggestion is only an option. You should have images to please yourself not others!!.   Posted: 12/05/2025 15:32:50

Kurt, Hats off to you!!!
I have spent ages trying to do the same and it is not easy by any means! Just deleted all my efforts and will have to have another go.   Posted: 12/15/2025 16:03:26

Hi Angela. No, it is not easy. I actually tried to recreate this with the traditional white baseball. It took a few tries to recreate the shot. However, the I felt the impact with the white baseball was much less that the orange ball, so I stayed with this shot.

Just one more piece of information for you: I took the shot from a little below and to the left. Having the point and shoot camera helped also. Because it is a smaller camera it was easier to keep it out of the shot.

I hope this works for you.   Posted: 12/15/2025 21:48:50

I have just tried again with a bit more success!! Did end up making a "space" image from the result in the end though.
Agree a white ball would not work as well as orange.   Posted: 12/17/2025 15:42:39

Very nice. Very creative and nice set up. Big difference between the in-camera photo versus the final image. Well done.   Posted: 12/11/2025 03:25:11

A very creative image! Well worth all the work you went through to get this result.
The red against the black background really makes it stand out. I like how the smaller ball keeps getting smaller as if it is moving. Great job!   Posted: 12/17/2025 23:44:11
