Dahlia Multiplied by Doug Wolters

September 2023 - Dahlia Multiplied

About the Image(s)

Shot with Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L lens with a taleidoscope, 8.0 sec at f/ 22. Last month’s taleidoscope was shot at f/ 2.8 or so. There is a big difference when stopped down. Do you like it? (If you want to see a taleidoscope wide open like my last month's image was, go to DDG80)

Doug, this is a very interesting effect. Very geometric! The colors themselves are gorgeous. Crazy what that lens can do. I do think that it would be much more powerful if the converging lines didn't bring my eye to a place that is not the center of the flower. Right now the lines bring me to a void in between the centers taking focus away from what I think you're trying to achieve.   Posted: 09/12/2023 18:17:49

Doug, this has beautiful colors and details. The lens filter does a great job merging everything into 1 image. I agree with Rich about the center of the image interest is not dead center. It seems that might be very difficult to achieve so I have two options that you will probably toss out. How about if you used the crop tool and rotate the image so that it's symmetrical. Another option that I would prefer would be to use topaz studio2 and crop to your desire and use a swirl filter, opacity at about 50% and/or one of the impressionistic filters moving the center of interest to another position. This would drastically change the look of the image but it might give you more options.   Posted: 09/12/2023 21:03:57

The detail and clarity of the flowers are really nice. I think that the color adds to the quality of the image. I don;t have a lot of knowledge on editing like this so I am unsure what else can be done to the image. I think overall it is a strong piece and the effects you use create an engaging composition.   Posted: 09/13/2023 22:51:10

Hi Doug,
Greetings.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful image. A special image that really provides an idea to try in the future. The geometric lines of the stacks are fine and asymmetric. That really creates an illusion for the viewers. I will learn more about this technique. Thank you for sharing.
Cheers.

Hi Doug, this is definitely an attention-grabbing image with its strong colours. I do share Rich's views that the geometrical lines distract from the main part of the flower. Is it possible to soften them?   Posted: 09/19/2023 04:58:19

They began as softer. I thought it was neither fish nor foul. So, I sharpened them in Topaz Sharpen / PS. I'm actually not convinced about this image. I think Kathleen Clemons would say that the divisions are counter to the spirit of the dahlia. My wife really likes the image. The divided interest between the meeting points and the dahlia is a plus for me -- a kind of counterpoint.   Posted: 09/19/2023 10:54:00
