August 2026 - Conversation with a Hosta

This image was taken with my Sony RX10iv at 38mm F4, 1/3200 sec. ISO 3200. The plant was at the edge of a woodsy area which allowed me to create a black background. In post processing, I cropped and straightened the image, reduced noise with Topaz AI Sharpen, and added a slight graphic filter with Topaz Simplify. My goal was to capture the subtle colors and shapes of this plant in an almost abstract presentation.

Ingrid, I really like the colors and composition of your Hostas' and feel that you did capture the group in an abstract fashion I don't think they grow in this way, so kudos in arranging them and capturing them in this appealing fashion. Well done. Posted: 08/10/2026 02:13:03
Thanks, Bob. This was a really young plant and I actually didn't have to move any of the leaves. I just had to get low to the ground which is always a challenge. Posted: 08/13/2026 22:24:09
Very interesting. It almost looks like a painting. For me, I think it needs a stroke to contain the image as I see the leaves at the top and though the black background of the page cuts off the top, the bottom seems more natural to me. I don't know if I'm explaining it well. I guess I'm looking for the rest of the leaves. Posted: 08/10/2026 03:02:13
Thanks, Marti. I considered showing the entire plant, including the tops of the leaves. but that made the plant significantly smaller in the frame and I wanted to emphasize the variation in color and the graphic nature of the shapes. It's funny that you think it looks like a painting. I posted it on Facebook and a painter friend of mine asked if she could paint it. She showed me the result and there is very little difference from the photograph. Posted: 08/13/2026 22:27:21
Very interesting -- nice capture of the subtle colors. I think the black tends to cut the image in two. I'd like to see it with a bit more of the leaves included. A vertical composition would not be out of line with these leaves. Posted: 08/20/2026 16:18:29
