About the Image(s)

I stumbled across a beautiful bouquet of sunflowers while grocery shopping a few days ago. There were 3 of these unique colored ones mixed with regular yellow sunflowers which was labeled Tequila Sunrise. I knew I had to choose one of the unique ones and take her portrait, LOL. Now I wish I had taken a photo of the intact bouquet as well because it was stunning. But...that's how it goes.

I used my 70 - 200 macro lens and placed her against a black velvet background and leveraged natural light coming from a large window. I had my camera on a tripod with camera settings of 96 mm at f 11, ISO 320, shutter speed 0.4 sec.

In Lightroom I adjusted overall exposure and then used masking in specific areas to reduce highlights and increase texture and clarity. I also darkened the background a bit more. I used the point color tool to select the greens and purples and worked on those color tones to enhance them.

In Topaz Studio 2 I applied the Smudge filter and adjusted it to add a little more movement and creaminess to the lines and textures. I'm torn about whether I should have just left the original texture and not used the Smudge filter. I'm curious about your thoughts on that. It may be so subtle that you can't even tell?

What a beauty! I loved the way you brought out the purple color in the flower. As to the Smudge filter, I'm afraid these old eyes can't tell the difference between that and the original with respect to smudging. The image is just beautiful as you have made it!
BTW, what and where is the "point color tool"?   Posted: 06/10/2024 16:06:40

Thanks so much for your comments! The Color Point tool is in Lightroom Classic and is fairly new. It's in the Color Mixer area of the Develop mode. It allows you to use an eye dropper to pick the color from your image that you want to adjust for Hue, Saturation, and Luminosity. So you can dial in on specific colors. I think it is a great addition to Lightroom.   Posted: 06/11/2024 17:56:07

Denise, I think this is a beautiful image with lots of impact. The colors are dramatic and with lots of detail. I know of nothing to recommend to change. Well done!

Denise, this is a beautiful flower, very well captured and I really like the processing that you have done. You might want to try a slightly tighter crop and perhaps brighten the flower head a little.   Posted: 06/17/2024 13:06:06

Something emphasizes those red petals. It is the smudge filter? If so, then you definitely should have used it. While the original is quite good, the final version is several steps better.   Posted: 06/18/2024 20:11:22

There is a level of sharpening I use with the Smudge filter that I think brings out those petals. I kind of forget that I do that with the Smudge filter as well.   Posted: 06/20/2024 15:01:39

This is stunning Denise. I love the enhanced purple colors and they are such a lovely complement to the orange blossom. I think that whatever you did to the petals worked wonderfully. The black background and fine, neutral border are nice finishing touches. No one would ever suspect that this was shot in a grocery store. Very special result.   Posted: 06/20/2024 22:27:30

I bought the bouquet at a grocery store and took it home to photograph it, LOL. Sorry if my description led you to believe I took this in the store Jan!   Posted: 06/22/2024 22:09:53

Hi Denise - this image is stunning! Thanks for letting us know about the selective colour selection in Lightroom - it will be very helpful. I do like Carol's crop. Otherwise, it is just perfect :)   Posted: 06/26/2024 03:59:21
