About the Image(s)

This image was taken of a part on an old train car that is in an outdoor display at a local transportation museum. The concept was to find an interesting composition featuring decaying metal, rust, flaking paint, etc. for a workshop I was completing. I used my 90mm macro on a bright, sunny day, so my settings were ISO 160, f8, 1/800 of a second. Post processing was done in Lightroom as follows:

- cropped in
- reduced overall exposure
- opened shadows
- increased texture and clarity
- increased black points
- used the point color tool to select the blue tones and orange tones separately and increased their saturation levels
- added a slight dark vignette

I always seem to question whether I cropped enough or too much when I'm trying to fine-tune a composition so feedback on that will be appreciated!

I tried several crops. The right side of the image has interesting texture, so I cropped from the left. Then flipped horizontally so that the rust could lead the eye to the circle. That didn't look right. You have just the right crop here. When cropping you can try every version. Save them separately and compare them. Some will say "eh", some will say "Yes!!" Just play. That takes a lot of time, but there's not much on TV anyway.   Posted: 05/08/2024 15:45:15

Denise, a well done macro image. I like your crop and would stay with that. I am enjoying all the different images this group is presenting.   Posted: 05/12/2024 17:32:41

Thanks Rita! We can get a lot of variety here so I'm glad you're enjoying your first month.   Posted: 05/12/2024 20:36:36

I think your crop is perfect Denise. You kept the most interesting parts. When I first looked at it, I saw a face. I got a chuckle when it looked like the bolt in the center was a stud in its tongue :) Your processing choices all worked great, and I wouldn't change a thing. It did occur to me that it might also look good as a black and white, so I've included a version processed with Nik SilverFx for fun. But your color version is perfect as is. Well done!   Posted: 05/17/2024 16:15:07

Thanks Jan! I considered black and white as well, but was in the mood for color. Thanks for sending your example!   Posted: 05/23/2024 22:07:34
