Tasting the First Snowfall by Rita Johnston

July 2025 - Tasting the First Snowfall

About the Image(s)

I took this photo in June in Yellowstone National Park on the day it snowed in the park. I was amused with the small child trying to taste the snow as it fell. In processing it, I went to ACR to correct light and color. Then I saturated the color some more, and used Color Efex Pro to correct the colors, and then sharpened the two people. I looked for a vintage or yellowing filter to apply, but I could not find a color one that worked. All comments are appreciated and any suggestions for an antique filter you know of would be appreciated.

What a delightful catch! You cropped in tightly enough and caught that child in a very cute pose. I remember the days when I tried to eat snow. How fun it was. Your image is a great story telling one.
I can't imagine snow in June, but since it is a 'snow' day, I wondered what it would be like in black and white. So I cropped it a bit on the bottom and added the same amount on top using the Content Aware feature of the crop tool. Then I added a B&W adjustment layer. I stamped up and took the result into NIK Color Efex Pro, to add even more appearance of snow. To do that, I used the Graduated Fog present, once for each side of the image. Back in PS, I used a mask to bring back the taller person's hate. What fun it was!   Posted: 07/05/2025 22:44:31

Thank you for doing all that! I am glad you liked it, and I too thought it was about something vs of something. I try to capture scenes like that when I see them, and like what you have done. Asking the group...do you prefer the color or b&w?   Posted: 07/06/2025 03:45:28

What a fun, special image Rita. It reminded me of the good old days when I would have done the same thing, LOL. Just for fun, I made two images that focused on the child and added some old photo edits to them.

In Lightroom, I removed the adult and cropped in on just the child. Then, for the first photo, in Nik Analog Efex I chose the Classic Camera 9 preset which I adjusted a bit to get this kind of burned out color image.

For the second image (in the second comment) I used Nik Silver Efex to convert to monochrome and chose the Classic Portrait Warm and Soft preset, then added a frame.

Just a couple of other ways to think about this image, but the story is all about the child in my opinion. That's why I removed the adult.

Great catch!   Posted: 07/12/2025 17:42:02

Denise, thank you. Really appreciate you listing the steps you did on it. I like the second one best, and never thought to take out the adult!   Posted: 07/17/2025 21:35:27

A playful image, well captured. I agree with Denise the image is all about the child and the back of the adult just dominates the image. So if you can I would remove the adult.   Posted: 07/14/2025 14:27:44

Such a sweet image. I agree with the other comments regarding taking out the adult. The expression on the child is priceless. Well done.   Posted: 07/19/2025 23:14:02
