About the Image(s)

This image was taken a few weeks ago whilst my husband and I were on holiday in the English Lake District. This area is not too far from us and one of our favourite places in the UK. The image is taken from the western shore of Lake Windermere looking across to the eastern shore just as the morning mists were clearing on the fells. I used my Olympus OM-1 with a 12-40mm lens at 40mm. The camera was hand held, and the settings were manual focus, f7.1, 1/400s, ISO 400, +0.3 stop.
The following changes were made in Photoshop after initial processing in Camera Raw:

-I cropped in and then copied the upper part of the image and inverted it to create a reflection.
-I added a small amount of Gaussian blur and motion blur to the reflection and reduced the opacity of this layer to keep some of the texture of the water from the original.
-I then converted the image to mono in Nik Silver Efex.
-I made some levels and curves adjustments and then added a vignette using Nik Darken Lighten Centre.

This is a very beautiful, yet chilling, image! (I'm freezing here in Oregon, while reading a novel that takes place in a 20 below zero area!)
I like your crop. The original was too bottom heavy. The way you handled the reflections also cleared some of the fog, it seems. All of your post processing really created a nice image.

I find this to be a lovely, peaceful image. Your crop improved the composition and the conversion to mono was a good decision in my opinion. It reduced the presence of the buildings, which I think works well. I also really like all of the layers you captured with the various pops of trees poking through the mist. Nicely seen and post-processed.   Posted: 02/12/2025 18:29:07

What a lovely image Carol. The layers of trees peeking through the fog are so interesting. The top most bit of trees seem to be gliding right up into the clouds. For some reason, my eye keeps getting drawn to the lowest group of buildings right in the center, with two windows lit up; so I might have cloned those out since all the other buildings are clearer and more interesting. Your crop is very nice and the texture of the water is so calming. Lovely mood here.   Posted: 02/12/2025 23:11:37

Carol, I also think this is a lovely image. Your processing was very creative. I can see the B&W cropped in further to see more of the buildings! When Jan mentioned the two windows lit up, it made me want to see a version with only golden lights from the windows. What a beautful scene you captured.   Posted: 02/20/2025 02:01:44
