About the Image(s)

In this image, I wanted to give the wooden ski jumper carving at the Iola Winter Sports Club a sense of presence and aspiration. By photographing it from a low, angled perspective in the parking lot, I composed the figure so he appears to be looking toward the sky, connecting the carved subject with the sport’s upward motion and sense of flight. I chose black and white processing to emphasize the weathered texture of the wood while heightening the contrast and drama in the sky, creating a stronger visual relationship between the sculpture’s surface and the atmosphere above it. Tech stuff: ISO 800, f/14, 1/100 sec., -2 step bias, aperture priority, 34mm focal length.
