About the Image(s)

Capturing the essence of autumn in Wisconsin, I photographed a striking red barn topped with a silver metal roof, standing resilient against the backdrop of dramatic October clouds. The barn's unique T-shaped design, complete with two white doors, is partially embraced by vibrant vines that cascade across the façade. Surrounding foliage bursts with seasonal color, creating a vivid contrast that highlights the barn's rustic charm ??” a perfect focal point for an autumn landscape scene. Tech stuff: ISO 500, f/11, 1/250 sec, aperture priority, pattern metering, 26mm focal length, 4 image stacked.

Removing the distraction (soft evergreen tree on far right edge) was a good call. The contrast between the silver roof/doors and the red roof really enhances the barn. Adding warmth to the path and golden yellow leaves and enhancing the greens really completes the image and adds life to the image. Darkening the skies gives depth and provides contrast to the overall background. Nice processing on this image...another one of your beautiful images of the Wisconsin countryside.   Posted: 12/13/2025 15:06:31

The original image does look rather flat and lifeless, but you have brought out the colours and sky detail well in the final image - especially the autumn colours that were almost missing in the original, so well done on that. A couple of suggestions - I would turn down the green saturation in the grass - just slightly - for me it is starting to go a bit artificial. Also it looks like the barn is leaning slightly to the right - you could correct that with a skew adjustment, but probably it really was leaning??   Posted: 12/16/2025 12:00:09

Gordon, thanks for your insights. We've had a lot of rain this fall, so the grass is unusually green. Some of the darkness is due to a linear filter to deemphasize it in the image. The horizontal line is in the roof, and all barns this age have a slight (or more) tilt to it. The added challenge in this case was that it was roadside, so I had to position myself so I didn't trespass.   Posted: 12/18/2025 19:28:11
