About the Image(s)

This month’s photo is called “Winter Fire Fight”. Last weekend a large apartment complex, still under construction, caught fire. It took 20 hours in below-freezing temperatures to finally put it out. I went by the next day while it was still cold to get a few pictures before the icicles melted. I made a few Lightroom adjustments and ran it through Topaz AI. Pentax K-1, f11, 1/250 sec, 210 mm, ISO1100.

This is why I moved to the low county of South Carolina! I would try moving the light off center to the right.   Posted: 02/13/2025 16:37:27

I'm glad you're there Jay and I'm not. I just can't imagine temperatures that produce scenes like this one. Your image is well seen and captured. I agree with your cropping out some of the distracting elements around the top of the image, in my mind they serve no real purpose to this image. For me, it's all about the cold temperature and ice hanging off the traffic lights. A great job Jay.   Posted: 02/16/2025 02:59:24

Thanks for your comments Ian. This is the front of the building. Those power lines were really something to look at.   Posted: 02/17/2025 00:01:58

A Song of Ice and Fire? Quite a unique event then, so a great subject to record - what was the temperature? Focusing on a small part of the scene is a good idea, and you also have the wide shot of the building for the overall view. The building creates quite a busy background, but I guess is needed to provide the 'fire' part of the story. Alternative title Winter Fire Light?   Posted: 02/17/2025 12:09:43

Your comment reminded me of a song by Pat Benatar very popular in the 1980's, "Fire and Ice." I wish I would have thought of it for a title. The temperature during the fire was -4 Celsius and the same when I was there taking photographs. Can't wait for spring.   Posted: 02/17/2025 16:04:06

Jay, I like this as a street photography shot. I wouldn't change a thing. There's a nice circular flow and the contrast of the lines coming down and the brick is wonderful. Kudos!   Posted: 02/22/2025 17:51:19

It's an astonishing document. It shows how the human eye captures images and frames. In the same place, I certainly wouldn't have taken the same photo. I love the harmony of the colors and the ice around the windows.   Posted: 02/23/2025 09:50:30
