About the Image(s)

Description: One of the areas I frequently go for Wildlife/Bird photography has an abundance of singular branches where one may isolate birds with uncluttered backgrounds. This image in particular was taken in early Spring and at that time an abundance of Fish Crows were present and this one bird was very cooperative in prefect lighting. The pose struck me as one who is proud, hence the file name. Nikon D500 at 1/2500 sec, aperture of 5.6 and 500mm lens. Basic processing for B&W conversion with enhanced blue filter in LR.

I love the colour image, it really does show off the background and how uncluttered it is. The detail in the bird is better In the mono. Both images are super and have strengths.   Posted: 07/08/2024 01:14:54

Hey Trevor! Yes it is a tossup eh? Although the detail and shading in the B&W is special. Thank You.   Posted: 07/08/2024 19:54:04

I agree with Trevor. Both are beautiful. For me though, there is something really special about the color - I think it is the gentleness of the peach background that makes the color on the bird's back so beautiful.
I think this one should be entered in mono AND color contests !!   Posted: 07/08/2024 14:09:15

Hey Melissa, Yep tough call. The color does provoke ones emotions of quietness and stillness-as it was when I captured it that morning. Thank you.

I have another version where I replaced the background. Let me post that one too and see the comments...   Posted: 07/08/2024 20:06:16

I think the color loses a lot when replaced with version 3. It seems to have just enough color to be distracting, where in the peach background it is just a compliment. And No. 3 is a mere shadow of the mono first version.   Posted: 07/20/2024 15:01:14

Hi Ed,
Nice portrait!
I like both version but not the one at the last, I am afraid. It looks a bit busy for me.
The original color version looks real, i.e. texture and color.
I like the eye in BW better, it frightened me a bit.

Thanks for the comments Haru! I will sometimes play with different versions of images just to see how they look and this series was one of those. Yes, the plain B&W is most stark and yes that eye sets the tone.   Posted: 07/16/2024 19:41:13
