This image is of the Stone Butter Church in the Cowichan Valley Just West of Duncan BC It was built in 1870 and used to about 1880 when a new church was built that was mor central to the settlements in the area. The unique name comes from the fact the builders were paid in butter from the Missions dairy herd. There are many stories associated with this church being haunted, The church is on First Nations land and access is prohibitted unless permission is granted by the First Nations Band. Our Camera club has a presentation from a Victoria Photographer on the wet plate collodion process,, which he is using. This peaked my interest and I dug out an old program I had that simulated old process's a long with other pre=sets. So chose to try it with this image. Still needs work. ISO 200, 155mm, f8, 1/400 second. As a point of interest he had all of the equipment with him and pointed out that when making an exposure his ISO was 1.

Ed - It is a great story - you are fortunate to have this image. I think the softness of the color is quite nice, but ordinary. For me, the mono seems to fit the story much more - it has an "old" look. The overall softness of shading feels historical - like a historical print. Except that the white of the church face stands out quite well in contrast to the surroundings. I think it holds the viewer's interest. Very nice.
It is hard to imagine an ISO of 1.   Posted: 11/02/2024 12:38:48

Hey Ed, historical subjects definitely benefit from B&W. It kind of "places" them in time. The obvious abandoned state certainly cements that feeling. In terms of crop take off some at the top to help focus the viewer's eye. I also like your processing...it helps with historical content.   Posted: 11/22/2024 23:07:50

Fast crop of the image so size (did not use the original) and you are right needs a bit more work and perhaps cropping a bit on the left , thats for another day.   Posted: 11/23/2024 00:35:41
