Costa Rico Waterfall by Sherry Icardi

December 2023 - Costa Rico Waterfall

About the Image(s)

This was taken in the Cloud Forest during my recent trip to Costa Rico. I found the Cloud forest was my favorite landscape location and took advantage of any pretty spot I found. This was not only beautiful, pristine, and captivating, it was adjacent to a patio that attracted many hummingbirds. During the first 1/2 hour I "focused " on the waterfall (unlike my other workshop friends) with this group specifically in mind. We were consistently between 8000 -10000 ft while in this area. And despite the cooler temps and the altitude there were many birds. I did not have my tripod so this was taken handheld. I used a fence to keep camera rock steady (pun intended).

Taken with my D500 and 24-120 mm lens at 58mm
1/15 sec
F/14
ISO 64

Beautiful image with the stream leading me right into the composition. The water is nicely blurred and a real task when handholding, even with a fence to help. The image is sharp from front to back so my eye continues through the photo. Colors are well done with the mostly dark green trees and light green moss on the rocks. Very nice image and post processing.   Posted: 12/18/2023 13:41:34

I love the slow blur of a waterfall shot. This photo does well. Good job with the handheld shot at 1/15. While the water in focus is beautiful and sharp. Some of the leaves in the background seem to be getting some motion blur too. I loved the colors - green cover, yellow and green moss, rocks, and the water. Beautiful shot.   Posted: 12/19/2023 09:48:07

A very fine image Sherry, taken under less than ideal conditions. No tripod, but a fence post. As John Lennon once sang "there are no problems, only solutions". Composition, viewpoint and use of elements in the scene before you are all good. A great attempt at getting the blurry water, that we know you love.

Can I please ask what was outside the frame to the left that influenced you to use 59mm as opposed to say 40mm? Just curious.   Posted: 12/20/2023 23:50:44

When I read 1/15th second I was blown away - wow, I would not have attempted it,nice job. This image is superbly composed and therein in my opinion lies its strength. The entire image is a tad soft so I tried to minimize it by adding, contrast, texture and clarity to the flowing water to separate it from the background. A common problem with "flowing stream" images is that in many cases they lead the viewer's eye off the page - in this case, you handled that beautifully in how you composed the image with pooling water instead of flowing water at the bottom of the frame. Also, the water was ever so slightly blown out so with the added contrast and clarity it darkened the pooling water at the bottom of the frame - then I added a touch of vibrance to the entire image. See my VF - and btw, thanks for having me in this group, you should all know I chose this group based on the images I previewed - what a dynamite group.   Posted: 12/23/2023 14:45:48

Beautiful image. The colors and composition are very nice. The color of the yellow moss on the rocks is beautiful. I like the smooth waterflow also. When I zoomed in the image I can see the motion blur of the trees and the rocks. I usually use Topaz Sharpen AI to fix motion blur images that works very well in many cases. Very nice capture.   Posted: 12/27/2023 08:42:17

Sherry - fence post or what ever - solve the problem and you did a good job! I like the colors and yes the water. I think the water is just a tad hot, but it is a great shot.   Posted: 12/29/2023 18:34:01
